"Mandatory Reporting of Mistreatment of Adults:Effective Panacea or Feel Good Placebo?"
with Charmaine Spencer, Gerontologist, researcher and lawyer

This presentation brings together a decade of research, policy and practice related to mandatory reporting for mistreatment of adults. It discusses what people commonly mean by the term "mandatory reporting". The presentation looks at mandatory reporting's underlying assumptions, the social, legal and ethical arguments supporting or working against its use, and how mandatory reporting functions in practice in different settings. It draws on BC's current systems along with experiences from other Canadian and American jurisdictions. The final story uncovers some successes, more than a few disappointments, and a long way to go.
