National

A Way Forward: Promoting Promising Approaches to Abuse Prevention in Institutional Settings

Description: This two year project's objective is to enhance the capacity of communities across Canada to better understand and respond to the complex issues of abuse and neglect in long term care. The project will develop

bullet

information on the current state of development for preventing and addressing abuse or neglect situations that may occur in congregate settings (a national snapshot of "Where do things currently stand in Canada"), along with

bullet

guiding principles and

bullet

emerging promising practices in abuse prevention and intervention.

The project involves a national survey of key stakeholders, as well as regional forums which will be held in Quebec, Nova Scotia, British Columbia, Ontario, and Alberta.

Partners and Funding: This national project funded by the National Population Health Fund is a collaborative effort of the University of Toronto (Institute for Human Development, Life Course and Aging), working with partners from six universities, as well as key community and long term care stakeholders.

Past Research and Projects

Throughout the 1990s Health Canada  Family Violence Prevention Unit funded many different research and community projects in different regions of Canada on abuse issues affecting older adults. Similarly over the past five years in particular, Justice Canada  has been supportive of community  initiatives that relate to abuse and neglect prevention in later life by providing funding for them.

Over time, we will endeavour to include as many of these projects as possible on this website, focussing particularly on those where have been reports or materials developed and where there is still a contact person for people to get in touch with for more information.

1998, the Third Age Centre in Fredericton, New Brunswick developed "Senior Educators Enhancing Community Safety" project. The project's goal was to

bullet

help reduce fear of crime, particularly among women and seniors,

bullet

increase public awareness of elder abuse and

bullet

mobilize communities to prevent these incidents.

This pilot project examined general statistical data generated by the Manitoba Office of the Public Trustee to identify and document  trends in the standard demographics of their cases of suspected financial abuse. It attempted to analyze client administration files which had been flagged as cases of suspected financial abuse by the Public Trustee's Office over a 12 month period. It compared  the  flagged suspected cases of financial abuse with a random sample of equivalent size selected from the general client administration files opened by the Public Trustee's Office.
