NEW HORIZONS APPROVED PROJECTS HRSDC Funding Alberta Council on Aging Preventing Elder Abuse Through Education "PEATE" The Alberta Council on Aging will develop and disseminate educational and awareness raising tools and resources to help Alberta seniors, service providers and the general public to reduce the incidence of elder abuse through increased awareness and knowledge of the issue. The key outputs of the project include a reference guide on elder abuse for service providers, a financial abuse handbook for both seniors and service providers, a DVD on financial abuse for seniors and a culturally sensitive training manual for service providers. Multi-disciplinary public presentations will be held across the province to present the new tools and resources. $288,744
British Columbia Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres -Honouring Our Elders: A Multigenerational Approach to Preventing Elder Abuse in Aboriginal Communities The British Columbia Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centers will develop awareness raising and educational materials and resources specifically targeted to Aboriginal people to help reduce the incidence of elder abuse within their communities. The key activities of this project include the development of a toolkit to help raise awareness and prevent the abuse of elders associated with the Common Experience Payments, and a more general toolkit to help raise awareness and prevent all forms of elder abuse. An elder abuse awareness campaign will complement the development of these tools and help raise awareness about elder abuse in Aboriginal communities. $294,500
BC Center for Elder Advocacy and Support (formerly the BC Coalition to Eliminate Abuse of Seniors) Seniors Reaching out to Seniors: Abuse Awareness Project The British Columbia Centre for Elder Advocacy and Support will develop and implement a comprehensive elder abuse awareness training and mentorship initiative. This initiative will include a new workshop on how to help a friend who is being abused, a Train-the-Trainer Manual to facilitate the delivery of workshops and a kit to help people start their own Seniors Reaching Out to Seniors Program. In addition, a support group will be established to support and mentor local organizations delivering elder abuse initiatives throughout the province. $298,144

Centre de santé et de services sociaux Cavendish Taking Charge: An Elder Abuse Info Line Initiative Increasing to Stop Abuse of the Elderly The Centre de santé et de services sociaux Cavendish, in partnership with the Julius Richardson Foundation, will develop a “Dos and Don’ts” pamphlet on elder abuse prevention and referral guidelines to assist professionals working with seniors and/or their families in abusive situations. These products will be key elements of the elder abuse awareness campaign they will launch to inform seniors and the general public on the signs of elder abuse, prevention techniques and where to seek help. An existing Elder Abuse Info-Line will be promoted as a first line resource that can support individuals who believe they may be dealing with elder abuse. Guidelines on how to set-up and manage a province-wide Info-Line will also be developed. $273,257
Community Health Promotion Network Atlantic Prevention Education: A Team Approach to Address Abuse and Neglect in Older Adults in Atlantic Canada The Community Health Promotion Network Atlantic will develop awareness raising and educational tools and resources to help communities across the Atlantic region address the issues of physical, emotional and sexual abuse of elders. The project will reach seniors, their families, caregivers and other service providers across the Atlantic region through the delivery of training workshops aimed at reducing the incidence of elder abuse. $258,100
Community Legal Information Association of Prince Edward Island Elder Abuse and the Law: What Islanders Need to Know The Community Legal Information Association of Prince Edward Island will develop and distribute legal information and resources to seniors, their families, caregivers and other service providers across the province in order to increase awareness and knowledge of legal responsibilities, obligations and resources, thus reducing the vulnerability of seniors to financial abuse. $175,818
Fédération de l’âge d’or du Québec Projet de développement d'outils multidisciplinaires de sensibilisation et de prévention des abus et de la fraude envers les aînés au Québec The purpose of this project is to make Quebec seniors - particularly the more vulnerable ones -aware of the reality of abuse and fraud, and to help them prevent such situations. The Fédération de l’âge d’or du Québec will develop bilingual, multidisciplinary awareness and prevention tools, such as a practitioner and volunteer training guide, theatre skits, an awareness DVD, a resource guide and an information pamphlet. $295,000
Fédération des aînées et aînés francophones du Canada Les aînés francophones en situation minoritaire : Ensemble pour contrer les abus, la violence et les fraudes The Fédération des aînés et aînées francophones du Canada will develop a number of workshops and an awareness campaign development kit adapted to the specific needs of Francophone seniors in minority settings outside Quebec. The tools developed will be easily transferable for use by Francophone seniors across Canada. A dissemination plan will be developed for each province and territory to ensure widespread access to the newly developed tools and an overall increase in seniors’ abilities with regard to prevention and intervention in situations of abuse. $532,505
Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia Seniors' Legal Planning Information Kit The Legal Information Society of Nova Scotia, in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Centre on Aging, will undertake a provincial project to increase awareness and knowledge of issues relevant to arranging one’s legal affairs to help protect seniors against financial abuse. Specifically they will develop resources and materials to help increase seniors' knowledge and understanding about arranging their legal affairs, and help increase the knowledge and understanding of family members, friends, caregivers, and practitioners/service providers working with seniors and their families, about both the legal-financial issues pertinent to seniors, and the available resources and supports. $259,482
National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly NICE "Elder Abuse Team: Knowledge to Action" The National Initiative for the Care of the Elderly will undertake a national project to produce and disseminate elder abuse prevention, detection and intervention tools and resources for seniors, their families and communities, medical practitioners and other service providers, in order to raise awareness of the issue of elder abuse and help reduce its incidence. Four multi-disciplinary teams comprised of older adults with expertise in elder abuse and neglect, and experts from numerous disciplines and professions, will develop tools such as an Elder Abuse Assessment and Intervention Reference Guide. Practical understanding regarding the use of the tools will occur through team presentations led by seniors in communities across Canada. $561,456
The Native Women's Association of Canada Bringing Respect and Care Back to the Elders - It's the Traditional Way! The Native Women’s Association of Canada will develop awareness raising and educational materials and resources specifically targeted to Aboriginal women across Canada in order to help reduce the incidence of elder abuse within their communities. As part of the project’s key activities and outputs, a literature review, consultations and further research will be carried out to support the development and dissemination of an informational booklet and infomercial designed to increase awareness and knowledge on the issue of elder abuse towards Aboriginal women. $227,683
Ontario Association of Social Workers O.A.S.W. Elder Abuse Handbook 2nd Edition The Ontario Association of Social Workers will help raise awareness of elder abuse by updating and distributing their popular Elder Abuse Handbook. This will ensure frontline service providers are equipped with an updated tool for detecting cases of abuse and deciding whether and how to intervene. $98,429
Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism Incorporated Teaching Through Drama: Fraud Awareness for Seniors Toolkit The Saskatchewan Seniors Mechanism Incorporated will increase the capacity of community-based organizations to raise awareness among seniors about fraud by creating a bilingual instructional toolkit that will train community organizations throughout the province on how to develop and deliver their own fraud awareness volunteer program. The toolkit will include a volunteer training manual (how to recruit, train and retain volunteers), educational material about the types of fraud and current schemes circulating in the province, presentation templates including scripts and video examples, and promotional and communications pieces that can be tailored by organizations to promote their own unique programs. $289,272
Seniors Education Centre - University of Regina Preventing Elder Abuse in Saskatchewan: Knowledge is the Best Medicine The Seniors Education Centre will develop awareness raising and educational tools, resources and training to increase awareness of and knowledge about elder abuse in Saskatchewan. To enhance the capacity of older adults to plan and deliver elder abuse awareness sessions for different audiences, six training workshops for volunteer presenters will be offered and a ‘how-to-guide’ for presenters attending the training workshops will be developed. The content of the awareness sessions will also be developed and tailored to specific target groups. A final output of this project includes a monthly wall calendar with facts and other information about elder abuse and neglect, including how to avoid elder abuse, signs to watch for and where to go for assistance. $193,000 St. Mary's Hospital Center Improving Seniors' Awareness of Elder Abuse through the Self-Administration of the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index (EASI) The St. Mary’s Hospital Center will convert an existing clinical assessment tool (the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index) currently used by family doctors into a bilingual, self-administering tool which seniors can use to assess whether they are in an abusive situation and where to seek help. The implementation and dissemination of the tool will help reduce the incidence of elder abuse by directly increasing seniors’ awareness and knowledge of the issue. $17,753 |
