Canada Plans for the First World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, 2006 !
Please let us know what is happening in your community, your organization to recognize abuse and neglect of older adults for the inauguration of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15, 2006). Click here for the Day's objectives. We would be happy to add your events and activities to the momentum rapidly building across Canada, and will update this site weekly. Let us know the event, time, date, contact person, and description of the event. Events posted within the last two weeks are marked
What Can I Do? In addition to group efforts such as these events, individuals concerned about abuse and neglect of older adults are showing their support in many ways. Service providers may decide to write special articles on an aspect of abuse or neglect in later life that they see in their work. Grandparents may talk with their grandchildren about aging and how to show respect for all generations. Concerned citizens may write letters to the editor or ask their newspaper to carry a special feature on the issues. Show your support for improving the lives of older adults who are experiencing (or are at risk of) abuse or neglect. ~~~ Click on the links below to find out about events and activities in your jurisdiction. We would like to thank the people and organizations that have volunteered to take on the role of liaison/ contact person in their province or territory for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day related activities. These volunteers help us let people in your region and other parts of Canada know what is happening. Please help them by keeping them up to date.
If you are looking for ideas, the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse has prepared a community guide and toolkit with a variety of suggestions. See: community_guide_1-20-06.pdf

Event: Awareness/ Recognition
Quilt, Conference and Proclamation Location:

please contact Denise Paquette, Elder Abuse Program Coordinator
Telephone: 613-932-3451 Description: The
Community Response Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse for the
Eastern Counties and Akwesasne has established a committee to plan for
June 15th World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The
Network is using the expertise of a local quilt guild in designing a
quilt. One third of the quilt will have pictures from their Taking
Care: A Safety Guide for Seniors. Four blocks on the quilt carry
messages on security, dignity and respect, autonomy-independence,
and freedom in both official languages.
In the last 14
squares, different senior groups in the five Counties and Akwesasne will
embroider and paint a message regarding abuse or neglect of older adults,
with the group they represent. The goal is to have all areas represented
and the messages in different languages - French, English, Dutch, and
Mohawk. This will represent the diversity of the population of the Eastern
Counties and Akwesasne. Some of the ideas captured may be prevention
slogans drawing on message the seniors groups consider important to get
across. The
Network will also be hosting “The CHOICE CONFERENCE", with a great
line of guest speakers who will talk about various approaches to abuse and
neglect in later life. The conference will have some vignettes performed
by Joan Hill followed by interactive discussion. The
Network is hoping to have local M.P.P. proclaim World Elder Abuse
Awareness Day at the conference with the unveiling of the quilt. They are
working to have articles in the local papers with examples of various
types of abuse. EASTERN ONTARIO Event:

In this biography, the author warns aging reader about the potential
vulnerability seniors can become victims of. A victim of financial abuse and
neglect, Mrs. Jolis wanted to show seniors that one “does not throw in the
towel” even at 97 years old when you are abused. Abuse must be denounced at
all times.
