Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day,

June 15, 2008

Please let us know what is happening in your community, your organization to recognize abuse and neglect of older adults for the second annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15, 2008). Click here for the Day's objectives.

We would be happy to add your events and activities to the momentum rapidly building across Canada, and will update this site weekly. Let us know the event, time, date, contact person, and description of the event.

What Can I Do?

In addition to group efforts such as these events, individuals concerned about abuse and neglect of older adults are showing their support in many ways. Service providers may decide to write special articles on an aspect of abuse or neglect in later life that they see in their work. Grandparents may talk with their grandchildren about aging and how to show respect for all generations. Concerned citizens may write letters to the editor or ask their newspaper to carry a special feature on the issues.

Show your support for improving the lives of older adults who are experiencing (or are at risk of) abuse or neglect.

We would like to thank the people and organizations that have volunteered to take on the role of liaison/ contact person in their province or territory for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day related activities. These volunteers help us let people in your region and other parts of Canada know what is happening. Please help them by keeping them up to date.

If you are looking for ideas, the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse has prepared a community guide and toolkit with a variety of suggestions. See: community_guide_1-20-06.pdf

BACKGROUND: June 15, 2006 was the debut of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

The day is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action which recognizes the significance of abuse and neglect of older adults as a public health and human rights issue. Throughout the world, senior abuse and neglect is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem.

Research indicates that public education campaigns like World Elder Abuse Awareness Day are vital for informing people in a growing number of countries about elder abuse and active involvement of the media is central to its success.

YELLOWKNIFE-NT (June 12, 2008)

Tom Wilson, President, NWT Seniors’ Society, spoke recently about the third annual
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day – June 15th , which has been declared internationally,
here in NWT and locally, as well as in other jurisdictions across Canada.

The purpose of this special day of recognition is to shed light on this family violence issue that
has remained in the closet for far too long. The NWT Seniors’ Society supports all initiatives to
increase the public’s awareness of adult abuse and neglect and to create systems to help
those in need to connect to support within their community. The Society has been involved in
providing workshops and community events to help people know about their rights, keep themselves safe,
and understand the factors that can put any of us at risk.

Many communities in the NWT are organizing awareness events and taking part in
Senior Citizens’ Week events for the week which kicks off with World Elder Abuse Awareness
Day. Initiatives include
bullet
picnics, poster and table displays,
bullet
