Canada Plans for the the Second Annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day,

June 15, 2007 !

Show your support for improving the lives of older adults who are at risk of abuse or neglect in the community, or institutional settings.

Please let us know what is happening in your community, your organization to recognize abuse and neglect of older adults for the second annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15, 2007). Click here for the Day's objectives.

We would be happy to add your events and activities to the momentum rapidly building across Canada, and will update this site weekly. Let us know the event, time, date, contact person, and description of the event.

What Can I Do?

In addition to group efforts such as these events, individuals concerned about abuse and neglect of older adults are showing their support in many ways. Service providers may decide to write special articles on an aspect of abuse or neglect in later life that they see in their work. Grandparents may talk with their grandchildren about aging and how to show respect for all generations. Concerned citizens may write letters to the editor or ask their newspaper to carry a special feature on the issues.

Show your support for improving the lives of older adults who are experiencing (or are at risk of) abuse or neglect.

We would like to thank the people and organizations that have volunteered to take on the role of liaison/ contact person in their province or territory for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day related activities. These volunteers help us let people in your region and other parts of Canada know what is happening. Please help them by keeping them up to date.

These materials are a useful addition to other local and regional ongoing awareness efforts throughout the country. Click here.

Event: Division of Aging and Seniors and the National Advisory Council on Aging web sites have links to information regarding World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Additionally, both sites, are running factoids/quotes on June 14/15 related to senior abuse.

June 15, 2006 was the debut of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD).

The day is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action which recognizes the significance of abuse and neglect of older adults as a public health and human rights issue. Throughout the world, senior abuse and neglect is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem.

Research indicates that public education campaigns like World Elder Abuse Awareness Day are vital for informing people in a growing number of countries about elder abuse and active involvement of the media is central to its success.

Event: In June, the Canadian Health Network will include information on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day under its June 2007 Health Events Highlights.

In preparation for the second annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day June 15,2007  the CRANE (Community Response to Abuse and Neglect of Elders) Education Committee is planning an all day seminar series at the Veiner Centre on:

June 13, “Senior Safety ~ It’s In The Bag!”

Speakers from Alberta Alcohol and Drug Abuse Commission; Protection for Persons in Care; Office of the Public Guardian; CRANE; Money Matters; and Police Services will share their expertise. CRANE Stakeholder displays will also be featured.

Seniors, families, friends, and neighbours will be invited to hear the speakers, stay for dinner, visit the displays and pick up educational material ~ all for the $5 admission fee.

100 seats are available for the seminar and at least another 100 people are expected to drop in for display viewing.  CRANE is looking for sponsorship to fund tote (or canvas) bags so that all participants can take home information on protecting themselves and others as well as what to do about abuse, neglect and self-neglect of older persons.

We invite our community to join us on June 13 to show the world we care about ending abuse and neglect of older persons.
