City Raises Awareness and Coordinates Services to Combat Elder Abuse June 15, 2010 The City of Edmonton has officially proclaimed World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action, which recognizes elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue.
The Edmonton Social Planning Council has produced this fact sheet in recognition of Elder Abuse Awareness Day (June 15th), and in conjunction with our Lunch & Learn session on the topic. The fact sheet includes: ◦a definition of elder abuse ◦categories of elder abuse ◦community resources, and ◦information on the prevalence and signs of elder abuse

Langley Memorial Hospital will host two seminars Wednesday, June 9th. Local health experts are hosting a seminar on abuse of older adults.
June 15 is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day and the education department at Langley Memorial Hospital has organized a seminar called My World, Your World, Our World Free of Elder Abuse.
Two 45-minute sessions have been scheduled, one at noon and another at 1 p.m. The presenters are Theresa Martin, who is the social work chief, and Leann Lange from Fraser Health.
The sessions are intended for the health care sector ( this includes physiotherapists, occupational therapists, nurses, pharmacist and social workers, so they are better able to recognize when they see it and better able to deal with it. Members of the general public may attend if they are interested. They can contact Griffiths at 604-534-4121 local 745791, in advance of the meeting.
Maple Ridge Abuse of older adults is a universal problem and is happening in communities all across Canada. One in five Canadians believe they know of a senior who may be experiencing some form of abuse.

Prince George Council of Seniors will host an event at the Council of Seniors office to mark World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. They will offer presentations and discussions as well as information materials. Those attending are encouraged to wear purple to demonstrate concern about abuse and neglect of seniors.

Revelstoke Seniors Association June Birthday Celebration/Tea with WEAAD event.
The local CRN will join the Revelstoke Seniors’ Association at their June Birthday Celebration with a presentation: ‘Shining A Light on Human Rights for Older Persons’, and will feature two new poems written by members for the occasion. This is their largest ‘birthday celebration’ tea of the year, (also celebrating July birthdays).
The local CRN will provide free draws for garden flower bouquets (contributed by CRN members), sets of greeting cards, and flashlights along with a number of gift certificates for ‘Tea or Coffee with a Friend’. They will use the lovely posters as placemats, which can be taken home along with CRN bookmarks, pamphlets and local Revelstoke Adult Safety Brochures provided in English and Italian.

Bringing awareness to Elder Abuse, Healthy Eating Choices. Includes a Luncheon

The Charlottetown Peer Advocates will host
an information sharing, activity and Luncheon for all seniors 60+. There will be
a short presentation and video on Elder Abuse, information hand outs, fun
activity, local entertainment and a traditional meal (including dessert) will be
served. There will be some prize giveaways. This event will take place at the
Town Council's Multi-Purpose Building @ 4:00 pm. and over 175 people attended. Older adults around the Burin Peninsula were invited to attend. It took place at the Marystown Hotel and Convention Centre and ran from 9 am – 4 pm. Participants are provided with a hot sit down meal including entertainment from the Grand Bank Theater Festival. The sessions were centered around the issue of healthy aging.
Evaluations from the day indicated everyone enjoyed the day and found it
informative. They stated they would like more events like this. that will remain up for the entire month of June in honour of WEAAD. Their main project this year is an afternoon for seniors in Bonavista. They will be inviting seniors groups as well as seniors in general from around the tip of the peninsula to come together for an afternoon of awareness
and entertainment on June 15th. Against Violence and the Seniors Resource Centre, welcomes seniors to celebrate Seniors Month, and to recognize World Elder Abuse Awareness Day at City Hall.
There will be information displays, presentations and music. Light refreshments

The role of elders has been very important and crucial in our history to address social wellness issues,”

They recently distributed posters to highlight the “Elders Support Phone Line,” where unilingual elders can receive peer-to-peer counseling in Inuktitut. Louis Tapardjuk notes

Thunder Bay The 2nd annual seniors Rock Walk will be held June 15th at 1 p.m., going from Grandview Arena to the Thunder Bay 55 Plus Centre, hosted by the Community Elder Abuse Prevention Committee. The walk will be followed by complimentary refreshments & entertainment. The seniors Rock Walk is a way for persons of all ages to celebrate respecting & supporting seniors in the community. Please wear purple, the colour of abuse awareness among older adults. Kirkland Lake Kirkland Lake council has declared June 15 as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in Kirkland Lake. The Timiskaming Elder Abuse Task Force made the request and has goals that include planning activities that will promote recognition and awareness for the prevention of abuse among older adults through education and resource materials and to provide resources education and referrals for seniors. The task Force is holding its Spring Fling 2010 June 15 at Riverside Place in New Liskeard from 11:30 to 2 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by the Grumbling Grannies. Seniors throughout the district are encouraged to attend the luncheon. It will provide awareness about abuse of seniors through information and skits. WINDSOR TREE PLANTING World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is recognized annually around the world on June 15. The community-based group, the Elder Abuse Resource & Prevention Committee of Windsor/Essex County invite you to help mark this important commemoration at a Tree Planting Ceremony at 10 a.m., Tuesday, at the south side of City Hall. The ceremony will be attended by the mayor and county warden. Light refreshments will be served. Similar ceremonies will also be held in Elgin and Oxford.
