Did You Know? World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is an opportunity for individuals, organizations, communities and governments to recognize and build awareness that many older women and men in their community and around the world experience abuse or neglect. The first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day was held by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse at the UN in New York City in 2006. The second was in Geneva in 2007. Canada was chosen to host the 2008 event in recognition of the contribution that it has played to knowledge development in this area and because of current government initiatives.
